It is starting to look like fall around here. The insects are singing their woes constantly and everytime I look out the window I see a yellow leaf flutter down from the walnut trees. I always wish that walnut trees were the last to loose their leaves instead of the first! *sigh*
I just finished a bowl of vegetable soup with homemade chicken broth and every single ingredient coming from my garden. It is full of tomatoes, turnip, potatoes, carrots, celery, cabbage, leeks and green beans. I love eating it and I always feel so much healthier when I do. I think it gives me super powers!! ha!
We are taking what we can out of the garden now, lots of beets, green beans, tomatoes, leeks, carrots, celery, turnip, and kohlrabi still. The broccoli is flourishing again and I can barely keep up. My cantaloupe and squash look like a bit of joke at the moment. Maybe they will pull through in the final hour, who knows?
And SURPRISE back by the compost heap there are potatoes growing!! I have never grown potatoes before and I am hopeful that this will pique my interest enough to get a little barrel going for them next year.
PESTS: I haven’t noticed any problems with hornworms on my tomato plants, usually a July fiasco, until last week. All of a sudden the plants looked to be in trouble. All I see are oodles of these big fat hornworms on all of them! The only good thing is that each and everyone already had the hornet eggs implanted on them so they aren’t going to be around for long. I think you are supposed to be able to just leave them there and nature will run its course.
BUT, they sure do hang on for a long time and once again I will tell you and show you, how disgusting they are!!
They give me the creeps! I think that if you could dress up like one for halloween you would get all the candy in town to yourself! Seriously!
Sorry if I scared you!
Enjoy the lingering heat,
